Prevention is Better Than Cure for Dog Vaccine: Why Do We Vaccinate Our Dogs For Rabies?

Pet Vaccine

Prevention is Better Than Cure: Why Do We Vaccinate our Dogs for Rabies?
by Maria Catherina “Catey” Carlos, Makati Dog and Cat Hospital

An important Dog Vaccine is the Anti-Rabies Vaccine.

Just as how we humans vaccinate for flu yearly, dogs must vaccinate for rabies every 1-3 years.

As a pet owner, you’ve probably heard the word “rabies” several times, either when talking to fellow pet owners, or to vets. Most of you would know that this disease is in fact, very dangerous. You might also know that this disease is transmitted through an animal bite.

However, there is a lot more to rabies than one might think. What many might not know is that rabies is categorized as a “fatal” disease.

Learn About Rabies

  • How does rabies work?

Once bitten, the rabies virus travels through the nerves, then to the spinal cord. Through the spinal cord, it reaches the brain. In the brain, it multiplies and then infects the nerve cells. This eventually leads to death.

Additionally, rabies is not only transferred through an animal bite. The rabies virus is contained in the saliva of the affected animal. If that saliva happens to land on broken skin, or mucous membranes (which are found on your nose and mouth!), then one can get infected.

What are the vaccines that your dog needs? Check the Dog Vaccination Schedule.

  • Preventable, but not treatable

Another reason why rabies is so devastating is because there is currently no treatment. It has a 99% mortality rate. Once the symptoms show up, it’s over. What makes it worse is that rabies symptoms can take weeks, or even months to show up.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Rabies is one of the most easily preventable diseases.  The rabies vaccine is highly effective, which makes the virus have a 100% prevention rate. It’s even possible to fully eliminate rabies. In fact, the U.S. state of Hawaii is successful in doing this

If you, a responsible pet owner do the proper medical care which is:

  • Vaccinate cat or dog every 1-3 years
  • If bitten, get vaccinated for rabies immediately

Then it is likely that you or your pet will not get infected with the virus

By vaccinating your pets from rabies, you are not only saving your own life, but you are also saving the lives of many other people, animals, and of course, your pet.

Pet Vaccination: Have You Given The Gift Of Life To Your Furbaby?

Pet Vaccination

Have You Given The Gift Of Life To Your Furbaby?

Ever heard of the term “Survival of the fittest?”

That was what it was like throughout history.

The world used to be harsh (in some areas, it still is).

There were lots of diseases that affected humans and animals alike.

Getting them was either:

  • a) a life of pain
  • b) a death sentence.

Medical Breakthrough and Pet Vaccination

Luckily newer medicines have helped in treating these diseases.

But prevention has always been better than getting sick in the first place.

Also, there is no guarantee that you will get better with the newer meds.

You may have been too deep in the disease process to recover (like in Rabies).

Or the damage has already been done (Distemper).

Even IF you get better,  life will never be the same (think of polio).

That is if you do get better.

Some don’t…

The way people kept themselves from getting infected before was to pray and/or get isolated.

There were so few options before.

Luckily a doctor in 1798 discovered the concept of vaccination!

His name is Dr. Edward Jenner.

During his time, smallpox was a deadly disease.

People were suffering and dying from this.

He created the smallpox vaccine and saved countless lives!

The suffering of the whole population has been alleviated!

Fast forward to the 21st century.

Scientists eradicated Smallpox.

Today, we can control diseases like measles and polio (with the occasional flare-ups).

This is all from the use of vaccines, the gift of life!

Various Pet Vaccinations are Now Available

We have extended the use of vaccines to animals.

There is the prevention of many diseases like Rabies, Distemper, and Parvovirus!

In some places, they don’t even see much of these anymore.

This is from effective control programs, which include the vaccination of pets.

If you love your pet, get them vaccinated!

Why Vaccinating Your Pet Against Rabies is a Matter of Life and Death

Anti-RabiesEverybody wants to keep their fur baby safe and healthy.

You think of getting a proper diet, regular exercise, and a safe place that keeps your pet from harm’s way.

One thing a lot of pet owners overlook is a dangerous virus found almost everywhere!

This is the Rabies virus!

It causes a lot of pain and heartache,  not only for pets but also for humans.

Those infected suffer a slow and painful death.

It’s heartbreaking seeing a person or animal affected by the virus.

What’s scary is the Philippines is one of the nations with the highest rate of rabies-related human deaths.

The disease remains a public health hazard after all these years.

How do we prevent people from getting it?

It’s as simple as having all dogs and cats vaccinated against Rabies.

The Rabies vaccine can be given as early as 16 weeks or earlier.

Yearly vaccinations are recommended against the virus.

Not only is this dangerous for your pet, but for people who will be exposed.

An unvaccinated pet or person exposed to an animal with Rabies will have a tough time.

They must be observed and/or quarantined for several days to check if they get sick of this.

People will have to get painful and expensive post-exposure shots to survive.

As a pet owner, are you willing to risk your fur baby from getting infected with the Rabies virus?

Are you willing to put yourself and your family at risk?

The best way to control the Rabies virus is to immunize your fur babies against it.

It will give you peace of mind besides protecting them.

By the way, a law in the Philippines requires your dog to be vaccinated against Rabies.

Call or message us at (Viber)0908-896-7113 or makatidogandcathospital@gmail.com. Set an appointment, and we’ll schedule the Rabies shots.

Follow Philippines laws and keep your fur babies safe.

No Need For Check Ups, Your Fur Baby Will Do Just Fine… So They Say

pet check-upMany pet parents think checkups are a waste of time and money.

This is because they hear of some pet owners having fur babies for years and never getting sick, even though they never have a checkup!

Those are the lucky ones.

They’re outliers.

There will always be that small percentage of pets that seem to never get sick.

Think about it.

Do you have that uncle or aunt who reached their 80s and 90s while smoking a pack of cigarettes daily?

And they still look like they’re healthy?

Heck, I know of an aunt who espouses smoking.

She smokes at least a pack daily and never gets sick because of it.

She’s in her 80’s and is still very healthy.

But… not everyone can be that fortunate.

She might be one of the lucky ones.

And we never know that she’s sick or suffering some disease related to smoking until it’s too late.

The same goes for our fur babies.

A lot of them may look normal.

They may even act like they’re very healthy.

But you can never be sure; you need to have them checked yearly.

For example, liver and kidney diseases are only detected when a large part of those organs are already damaged.

Some diseases like Heartworm infection may not show signs until it’s too late.

A lot of diseases could have been treated or managed if they were only detected early.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda…

Things could have gone for the better if only we had known earlier.

Like people, our fur babies need to have their annual checkups.

We have to ensure they don’t have any underlying condition we need to handle.

Call us at 0908-896-7113

8896-6386 / 8896-2860 or message us at makatidogandcathospital@gmail.com for that appointment.

We’ll check your furbaby to ensure there’s nothing to worry about!

The Dangers Of Rabies

rabies shotRabies is a disease caused by a virus.

Any mammal can get infected.

It is found in ALL continents except for Antarctica.

It is so dangerous it will most likely be fatal once anyone gets it!

Reservoir animals in some countries would include a lot of wildlife like bats, foxes, raccoons, and skunks.

Domestic animals can also carry the disease.

In the Philippines, it is mainly found in dogs.

Next are cats.

Rabies Prevention Tips: What To Do To Lower The Risk

Sadly, our country is endemic to this disease.

Humans mostly get Rabies from dog bites.

We have been included in the top 10 countries where people get infected.

Because of this, there have been A LOT of rabies prevention programs for decades.

The goal is to eradicate this, although it is tough to do.

As responsible pet owners, we should all do our part.

Have all of your pet dogs and cats vaccinated for Rabies.

There are government programs that offer free rabies vaccination.

But why wait for this?

When you have a pet, make sure that it is part of your wellness program to get vaccinations against Rabies.

You will probably be saving not only their lives but also yours!

Have peace of mind.

Are You Scared Of Vampires?

Rabies

Twilight.

Interview With The Vampire.

Buffy.

Vampire Diaries

All the different stories about the legend of Dracula.

A lot of stories have been written about vampires.

People are obsessed with them.

Just check all the books, comics, movies, and TV shows that tell us stories about these bloodsuckers.

There are even documentaries about them.

But did you know that the mythology of vampires may have come from a real-world menace?

This threat to society comes from a virus-caused disease which is Rabies!

If you think about it, many of the peculiarities of vampires in legends are signs caused by rabid animals or people.

Signs like:

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Biting others
  • Hydrophobia or an extreme fear of water

Rabies is a hazardous disease that is present in more than 150 countries!

It can virtually affect all warm-blooded animals, including humans.

Once any susceptible organism gets infected, it is most likely fatal.

According to the WHO, it kills at least 59,000 persons a year.

However, it is believed that this is an underestimation.

As veterinarians, we always think of the possibility of rabies infection on the animals that we handle.

Rabies: Should It Be Given Annually?

Especially in the Philippines, where we are considered a high-risk country for the disease.

We get regular vaccinations against Rabies to protect ourselves.

What about our pets?

Dogs comprise about 98% of the animals infected with Rabies in the Philippines.

Next in line are cats.

If they get infected with the Rabies virus, they will suffer horribly before they die.

In addition, they become dangerous for people and other animals.

That is why you must get ALL of your fur babies vaccinated against this disease.

Not only will you be protecting your pets, but you are also protecting yourself and your family from this horrible threat.

Zika Virus: The Virus That Threatened The Rio Olympics

Paz Carlos - Zika Virus

After finishing my graduate studies at UC Davis, where I earned my MPVM and Ph.D. degrees, I decided to make a difference in the world.

This led me to visit places like American Samoa and Puerto Rico.

I continued to do my research on human viral diseases of concern.

In layman’s terms, these are diseases that have been causing (or have the potential) pain and suffering of people.

Sad to say, many of these are challenging to treat and prevent.

It takes a lot of effort to finally control them.

An example of this is the Zika virus.

Symptoms observed include joint and muscle pains, reddish eyes, headaches, and fever.

The worst that may happen is when a pregnant woman gets infected.

There is a big chance that her baby will be born with a defect called microcephaly or other brain defects,

This virus is the nightmare of all parents!

The Zika virus threatened the success of the Rio Olympics in 2016!

I provided the programmatic support of pregnant women and infants on the Zika virus. Thankfully, it helped in the control and eradication of the virus in certain areas.

Besides the Zika virus, there are a lot of other disease-causing organisms out there.

They may be controlled by sanitation, hygiene, isolation of infected, etc.

One promising way of finally making them disappear is the development of vaccines that will prevent people from getting infected in the first place.

To date, a lot of these vaccines are in development for the prevention of any possible resurgence of the Zika virus and other diseases.

Vaccination against viral infection is one of the main ways to prevent the spread of deadly diseases globally.

There are also a lot of vaccines used to prevent infection in dogs and cats.

Make sure that your fur babies are protected from deadly diseases like Rabies.

Call us at 0908-896-7113 / 8896-6386 / 8896-2860  to have your pets vaccinated against infectious diseases.
