Why You Need To Go To A Licensed Veterinarian

Do you still question if you need to go to a licensed veterinarian?

Hi,  I’m Dr. Sixto and with me is my mother Dr. Rhodora Carlos.  We are both veterinarians and we will be sharing info here so you can keep your furbabies healthy.

licensed vet

It all started with my great grandfather, Dr. Sixto Carlos (yes, I was named after him).  He was a veterinarian. He was one of the first ones in the Philippines. Following his footsteps was my grandfather, Dr. Enrique R. Carlos.

My father, Dr. Enrique T. Carlos is also a veterinarian. He met my mother in Uni. My half-uncle, Dr. Thomas Carlos is also a veterinarian.

My two sisters are also vets. The elder is Dr. Ligaya Carlos-Santos, but she continued on becoming an MD. My other sister, Dr. Paz Carlos, has a PhD in comparative pathology and is currently a virologist for a prestigious institution.

So why ask a licensed veterinarian about concerns with your pet dog or cat?  A lot of times I would read in forums or posts in social media people asking how to handle the problems of their pets.  A lot of the suggestions you get are incomplete and can be more dangerous to your pet rather than helpful.

Not that people want to cause harm, they actually want to help. Most are incorrect, some are dangerous and a handful are actually okay. The problem is, you wouldn’t know which of the suggestions you read are correct.

Common Question For Licensed Veterinarians: Pet Scratching

A good example is asking for what you should do if your dog scratches a lot. We see some suggestions like using a certain shampoo to get rid of parasites or maybe an oral medication to stop the scratching. Not that it’s outright wrong, but it is incomplete.

There are several reasons why your pet may be scratching. The cause may be bacterial, fungal, parasitic or it may be an allergy. You need to know what is the specific cause to treat the itchiness properly.

Common Question For Licensed Veterinarians: Pet Vomiting

Another example is vomiting. It may be caused by the inflammation of the stomach, intestinal blockage or even ear infection.

Each of the mentioned causes have a specific line of treatment.

Giving the wrong one will not help and because of that, the condition may worsen and may even lead to death.

Vaccination by Non Licensed Veterinarians

A current problem right now is the vaccination by non-veterinarians. Vaccination of dogs and cats should be done by veterinarians licensed by the Philippine Regulation Commission.

People may ask, what for?

The average person has no training in handling vaccines properly. Which and when they should be given is also something important to consider.

A licensed veterinarian can suggest proper preventive medications so your pet will not get sick.  For example, he or she can recommend the proper preventives for  heartworms, which is a very common parasite in dogs in the Philippines.

If your pet dog catches this, the treatment is quite expensive and has some risk.  There have been horrible suggestions that we’ve seen online. There are quite a few ways on how to prevent from catching this worm. You just need to know the correct ones.

For the reasons mentioned (and much more), it would be good for the pet owner if he would invest in a licensed veterinarian.

The vet doesn’t just study for six years, review for the board exams and pass it.

No; he has to continue his education to be familiar with what’s new, what’s accepted and what isn’t suggested anymore. He needs to attend conferences and trainings to update his knowledge and skill. These are actually requirements so he can renew his license every three years.

Decide now to go to a licensed veterinarian.  He or she will be able to recommend the proper preventives and treatments to keep your dogs and cats healthy.  It would be good so you have peace of mind.

How about you? If you are a responsible pet parent you will choose to go to an expert veterinarian.
